Lifespan of a Honey Bee – Some interesting facts about Honeybees you were incognizant of
We all love eating honey and know where it comes from; honeybees, that’s evident. But there are some facts about honeybees and their lifespan you were totally unaware of. Here are the facts:
There are 3 kinds of bees in a beehive: The Queen, the Worker and the Drone and only the Queen lays eggs. She is the one who is responsible for the functioning of the beehive. When the queen dies, the beehive comes to an end because there would be nobody to take care of the beehive. The queen communicates with her hive with her own unique scent called pheromones.
Then comes the worker bees. All the worker bees are female and all of them are infertile. The worker bees perform all the apposite tasks in a hive such as cleaning, feeding the baby bees, feeding and taking care of the queen bee, packing pollen and nectar into cells, building and repairing honeycombs and guarding the hives. These workers also perform other tasks which are outside the hive such as gathering nectar and pollens from the flowers, collecting water etc. These worker bees have two stomachs-one for eating and the other for storing nectar collected from flowers which they carry back to their hives.
Only the female bees have a stinger. A female bee dies once she uses her stinger.
The male bees in a hive are the drones. Their job is to find a queen in the hive to mate with. Male bees fly out and envisage to meet a queen to mate with and they don’t have stingers.
Bees have five eyes!! Two compound eyes and three tiny ocelli eyes. The bees use their honeycomb cells to raise their babies in, to store nectar, water and honey.
Bees are the only insects in the world that make honey which is edible for humans.
Bees have been here around for 30 million years! It can fly at a speed of 16 mph. Its wings beat 200 times per second! That’s fast.
A beehive in a summer can have as many as 50000 to 80000 bees! A bee must collect nectar from about 2 million flowers to make 1 pound of honey. It requires around 600 bees to make one pound of honey. Bees fly more than once around the world to gather a pound of honey and every single beehive can make more than 100 pounds of honey.
Life expectancy of a bee is about 3 three to six weeks.
There are five products that come from the hive: honey, beeswax, pollen, propolis and royal jelly.
Propolis has anti-bacterial properties too which scientists use in the medical field.
Killer bees a.k.a. Africanized bees are much more aggressive bees which were created in the labs of Brazil. Actually, scientists wanted to create bees which will produce more honey but they ended up with creating bees which produced less honey but were more aggressive!
